ABOUT ABBY

Abby is a barrister at Bolton Street Chambers in Newcastle. She practises in family law, criminal law, wills and estates, family provision, guardianship, equity (protective) and broader civil litigation. She accepts briefs beyond the Newcastle and Hunter Valley Region and regularly attends courts in the greater Sydney area. 

 

She regularly appears for individuals and families ranging from urgent parenting recoveries and Magellan matters to contested estate litigation, guardianship proceedings, and criminal matters. Abby is known for her compassionate approach and her ability to support clients through highly sensitive and often distressing disputes, including cases involving family violence, vulnerable children, and disadvantaged clients.

Abby was called to the bar in 2025.

Before being called to the Bar, Abby practised as a solicitor at firms in Newcastle, the Hunter Valley, Canberra and Forster. She managed complex family law, wills and estate, and criminal law matters and was the instructing solicitor in published cases. She appeared as solicitor and solicitor advocate before the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, the Supreme Courts of New South Wales, the New South Wales Local Court, the Childrens Court and NCAT.

Abby holds a Master of Laws (Applied Law) with a double major in Family Law and Wills & Estates, and has built a reputation for clear advocacy, strong analytical skills, and a client-focused approach.

Outside of practice, Abby is a competitive showjumper and Vice President of the Hunter Valley Showjumping Club. She is passionate about community involvement, mentoring, and supporting younger riders and practitioners.

Areas of Practice 

Family Law 

Abby appears in a wide range of family law matters, including parenting disputes, urgent recoveries, Magellan proceedings, and complex property settlement with complicated business/financial structures.  She has extensive experience supporting clients through sensitive cases involving family violence, child welfare, and high-conflict disputes, bringing both strong advocacy and a compassionate approach.

She is also able to provide advice that considers the broader implications for wills, estates, and succession planning, offering clients holistic guidance in complex family law disputes.

Criminal Law 

Abby appears in criminal matters at all stages, including bail applications, defended hearings, trials, and sentencing proceedings. She has experience acting in sensitive cases involving children and young people before the Children’s Court, as well as matters involving family violence and complex criminal allegations. Abby is committed to providing clear, practical advocacy while supporting clients through challenging circumstances.

Wills & Estates (Incl Family Provision & Succession) 

Abby advises and appears in probate, contested succession matters, and complex family provision litigation. She regularly acts in claims involving competing family members, blended families, and vulnerable beneficiaries, and has experience with matters intersecting with trusts and protective equity. Abby brings a unique ability to provide estate advice that also considers potential family law impacts, ensuring clients receive strategic and holistic guidance.

Equity (Protective) & Guardianship 

Abby appears in protective jurisdiction matters, including applications in the Supreme Court’s Equity Division and proceedings before NCAT’s Guardianship Division. She acts in cases involving the appointment of financial managers and guardians, challenges to capacity, and disputes concerning the protection of vulnerable persons. Abby is experienced in navigating the intersection between protective law, family law, and estates, and is recognised for her compassionate approach when dealing with sensitive and often distressing circumstances.
